It is the young Mr. Cotton who is spoken of as "the model young master" in Thomas Hugh's famous book 'Tom Brown's School days'. He was personally selected by Queen Victoria as Bishop of India, Burma and the Island of Ceylon. As Biship of Calcutta, on 28th July 1859, a service was held and collections were made in most of the Churches of the Diocese for the raising of a public School at some Hill station in the Himalayas. The collections were utilized for founding Bishop's School at Jutogh, as it was then called. The land and buildings on it were given free by the Viceroy. The School opened on 15th March 1863. By the year 1864 the school increased its strength to 65, the highest number of pupils the buildings and grounds permitted. Bishop Cotton personally found ten alternative sites and finally approved the south end of knolls Wood Spur.
